Choosing a Therapist

Finding a therapist that is a good fit can be a challenge. The decision to even seek a therapist out to begin with can be an extremely difficult decision to make. Therefore, when you initially make this decision, you want it to be a good one. These considerations will hopefully help you in knowing what to ask of the professionals who you are seeking out.

1. Location: Is your therapist close to you? You’re much more likely to want to follow through with going if it is convenient to get to therapy. There are some options like Skype counseling, but this is not ideal because your therapist is not able to easily read your bodily language like she would be able to do in person.

2. Problem Focus: What are you wanting to work through? Different therapists and different approaches tend to work better for different problems. Asking your therapist specifically how she can help you with your problem will be useful in you making your decision.

3. Comfort Level: Comfort is the most important factor in the therapeutic relationship. If you don’t feel comfortable, you will likely improve in therapy. You want to feel as though this is someone who you can talk to, as you get to know her better.

4. Referral: Did a professional who you trust refer you? Asking other professionals that you trust who they would recommend is a great way to find a therapist who may be able to help you.

5. License: Is your therapist a licensed professional? There are many people who are not licensed, but call themselves coaches, guides or even counselors. Ask if your state has licensing requirements and make sure that your therapist is licensed to be able to provide such services.

Although this list is not a complete list, it is hopefully a simple guide to help you begin to make a decision on who you would like to work with. Remember that sometimes it takes time to find the right match, so do not get discouraged if you find a therapist, and it doesn’t work out. With the right match, you can live the life that you are wanting to live.
